All About VRF/VRV AC Systems

Though they have different names, VRF and VRV AC systems are the same thing. VRV stands for “Variable Refrigerant Volume,” and VRF stands for “Variable Refrigerant Flow,” but the technology is the same. 

These AC systems are a type of mini-split system, meaning you’ll have one outdoor unit and several indoor units that control the climate in different household zones. 

This layout means you can cool different rooms individually, depending on the preferences of the people in your house. There are three main types of VRF/VRV AC systems, including heat pumps, heat recovery systems, and cooling-only systems. Let’s look at each one individually:

Cooling-Only Systems

Cooling-only systems are capable of cooling your home, but you can’t use them for heat as well. These systems are very energy-efficient compared with other air conditioners, and you can easily control different zones in your home to your precise temperature requirements.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are the most popular type of VRF/VRV systems because they can both heat and cool your home, depending on the time of year. 

This setup means you only need one system for your climate control needs, but keep in mind that you can only use either the heating or the cooling function at one time. You can’t heat some rooms and cool others.

Heat Recovery Systems

These VRF/VRV AC systems can handle both heating and cooling and give you ultimate control. You can heat some rooms while cooling others, so they’re even more versatile than heat pumps.
